2019 Recruiting Class

The Committed:

  1. S Dax Hill 5-Star 6'0"/185lbs (Tulsa, OK) Grade: 95 - One of the best recruits in the country and one of the top players ever recruited to play football at Michigan. Has the speed to fly around the field and cover the deep zone or man-up on receivers. Name a school and I bet they wanted him.
  2. DL Christopher Hinton 5-Star  6'3"/280lbs (Norcross, GA) Grade: 93 - A legit top 50 prospect in this cycle that projects to tackle. He could be a Maurice Hurst-type of player that lives in opponents' backfields, but if he can help stuff the run right away that would be awesome. Expect to see him get playing time early in his career. The entire SEC offered him.
  3. RB Zach Charbonnet 5-Star 6'1"/205lbs (Westlake Village, CA) Grade: 91 - Has all the right tools to be a top-tier weapon in the BIG. He won't be the fastest guy in college, but he will be fast enough to outrun a lot of defenders. He really excels at cut-back moves, lowering his shoulder to initiate contact, and hitting top speed very quickly out of the hole. UCLA, USC, Washington, and Wisconsin were all near the top of his list, but Florida, Michigan State, and Oklahoma, among others, were still in the hunt for his services up until NSD. He should immediately join the rotation in the backfield.
  4. DT Mazi Smith 4-Star 6'3"/290lbs (Grand Rapids, MI) Grade: 88 - A big, athletic line prospect from the home state. Can penetrate and pursue but doesn't have elite pass-rush skills. Looks like a very good run-stuffer that appears more fit to play the nose, but could develop just enough moves to make a splash in backfields too. With 'Bama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Penn State also pursuing him, he was a huge get for the Wolverines.
  5. OG Nolan Rumler 4-Star 6'4"/290lbs (Akron, OH) Grade: 86 - Yet another top 100 prospect that appears to be a strong candidate for early playing time. He is strictly an interior line prospect, but that is okay because he is a very good one. Expect to see him challenge for a starting spot by his second year on campus. Ohio State, Clemson, and Alabama all want him to flip to their respective programs.
  6. OT Trente Jones 4-Star 6'6"/280lbs (Loganville, GA) Grade: 86 - A large-framed line prospect that shows all the necessary traits of a future college tackle. He can punish defenders on run blocks and utilizes decent footwork to slide and mirror in pass pro. Does need a lot of work still, but could develop into a starter sooner rather than later. Georgia, Florida State, Florida, and 'Bama all had offers for him on the table too. He was quickly rising up the rankings in the last few months of the cycle.
  7. OT Trevor Keegan  4-Star 6'6"/310lbs (Crystal Lake, IL) Grade: 84 - The last lineman to commit to play at Michigan, he completes an extremely good haul at the position. He is big enough play right away, but needs to get stronger. Of course, as it is with most young linemen, he needs a lot of work on his technique as well.
  8. LB Anthony Solomon  4-Star 6'0"/190lbs (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) Grade: 84 - A very good linebacker prospect that displays exceptional on-field quickness and instincts. He is a fundamentally sound tackler too. Was very productive on a very good high school team against very good competition. Was committed to Miami (FL) and was also being pursued by 'Bama, Ohio State, Clemson, and everybody else. He will get some work at Viper, but he could end up playing Will if he gains a bunch of weight.
  9. CB Jalen Perry 4-Star 6'2"/171lbs (Dacula, GA) Grade: 83 - Perry is the top rated corner in a very nice haul of players at the position for the Wolverines in this cycle. His long frame, smooth athleticism, and natural ball skills make him a prime prospect for this defense. Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Clemson, Ohio State, and Penn State all had offers in for him, among a swarm of others.
  10. Cornellius Johnson 4-Star 6'2"/195lbs (Greenwhich, CT) Grade: 82 - A very good receiving prospect in the realm of Greg Mathews or Marquise Walker. He is well-built and could be a tough runner after the catch. With offers from 'Bama, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Stanford, it's easy to see that he was highly coveted. He appears to be polished enough in his route-running to compete right away.
  11. QB Cade McNamara 4-Star 6'1"/190lbs (Reno, NV) Grade: 82 - An Elite 11 finalist, McNamara was previously committed to Notre Dame and was being heavily pursued by Wisconsin, Georgia, and 'Bama. He displays all the necessary arm strength and athletic ability to be a pass-run threat similar to what Harbaugh was three and a half decades ago. He is another legit passing prospect that the Wolverines have landed, again. Harbaugh will now be 4 for 4 in signing a top passing prospect (Peters, McCaffrey, Mixon/Patterson, McNamara) in his last four full recruiting classes at Michigan.
  12. LB Charles Thomas 4-Star 6'0"/220lbs (IMG Academy) Grade: 81 - Thomas might not measure up athletically with the elite prospects in the country, but he can outright play football as good as any of them. He is a quick, twitchy kind of player that is extremely active and seems to always be around the ball. He won't blow scouts away with his measurables, but he might just have the right mixture of I.Q. and instincts to make him a very good player at the next level. Appears willing to work for it. Clemson, North Carolina, and Tennessee have pursued him hard but he was committed forever before signing.
  13. CB DJ Turner II 4-Star 5'11"/165LBS (Suwanee, GA) Grade: 81 - Is not considered to be the elite-level athlete at this point - he needs to bulk up - but his pure football skills and I.Q. are college-ready. And while he might not have an extremely high ceiling, he could be a three or four year starter for the Wolverines. He should at least be a solid nickelback. Everybody wanted him on their team, including 'Bama, Georgia, Clemson, Florida, and Notre Dame, as well as most of the Big Ten and Big 12. That indeed tells me a lot about his abilities on the field and in the classroom.
  14. OL Karsen Barnhart 4-Star 6'4"/280lbs (Paw Paw, MI) Grade: 81 - A late-rising prospect that made a bit of a name for himself on the camp circuit this past year. Could have enough athleticism to play left tackle but might be better suited inside at guard or center. Has played tight end, so...who knows? Let's just see what happens in a year or two. In the meantime, put him in the strength and conditioning program and let bake. USC, Arizona State, Iowa, Nebraska, and Michigan State were all actively pursuing him up until the end.
  15. S Quentin Johnson 4-Star 5'11"/190lbs (Washington, D.C.) Grade: 81 - Is still rising up in the rankings a little bit as a very good athlete that could play both ways and/or return kicks. His body and skill set translates well to defense, though he displayed good speed and toughness as a wide receiver in high school. He has been told he would get work at both the "Rover" safety and the "Viper" 'backer positions, so it is obvious the coaches are very high on him as an eventual replacement for either Kahleke Hudson or Josh Metellus. 'Bama, UNC, Penn State, and Virginia all were high on his offer list. Like Dax Hill, Johnson blew up the skills tests at the All-American Bowl practices.
  16. DE David Ojabo 4-Star 6'4"/230lbs (Blairstown, NJ) Grade: 80 - Ojabo is a very good athlete with elite-level speed for a guy his size. He apparently runs the 100m dash in under 11 seconds. That is fast. He has only played a total of seven high school games leading up to his senior year though, so he will require some time to develop a feel for the college game. He could pay big dividends in the end though. Arizona State, Cal, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Clemson, Penn State and a slew of Ivey league schools all offered him too, so he too has some real national appeal as a student-athlete.
  17. WR/RB Giles Jackson 3-Star 5'8"/180lbs (Oakley, CA) Grade: 80 - Michigan needed to add depth at the slot as well as at running back. Jackson fits the bill to fill in at both with amazing quickness and speed to go the distance once the ball is in his hands. He could team up with the other backs in this class to form a very dangerous trifecta out of the backfield. If he can learn to pass block he could be a serious threat on third-downs. Cal, Colorado, and Florida were all still hopeful that they could get him to flip his commitment. USC had shown some interest too.
  18. SDE Mike Morris 3-Star 6'5"/255lbs (Delray Beach, FL) Grade: 79 - Big-bodied end with room to grow. Shows a nice combination of strength, quickness, and athleticism, but he is nowhere near the type of player he could become at Michigan. Reminds me a little bit of Carlo Kemp as a prospect, and with a lot of work could end up on the inside too. He was once committed to FSU and both Tennessee and Clemson were hot on his heels.
  19. TE Erick All 3-Star 6'4"/225lbs (Fairfield, OH) Grade: 78 - A very good tight end prospect with a well-rounded game. Can find the seam on deep posts, make shoelace catches on the sideline, or drive a defender 10 yards out of bounds on a run-block. He is not unlike Mustapha Muhammad in terms of game, but he might not be quite as athletic. At any rate, he should fit right in at Michigan. Florida State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Michigan State all had offers on the table for him, among others.
  20. ATH Mike Sainristil 3-Star 5'10"/175lbs (Everett, MA) Grade: 78 - A very underrated athlete and a very good defensive back or wide receiver prospect. His tape is exemplary. His offer list was growing late in the game, with Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, UNC, and Ole Miss all after him. Penn State had been showing lots of interest too. He could be a dangerous player some day.
  21. OG Zach Carpenter 3-Star 6'3"/310lbs (Cincinnati, OH) Grade: 77 - A very large interior line prospect. Isn't the most athletic kid, but shows enough flexibility and quickness to get into position and deliver punishing blocks against good competition. Will need some time to get into real college football shape, but could be a real force in the run-game some day. Ohio State had not offered, but they had maintained contact. Arkansas, Clemson, Duke, and Nebraska did offer him and kept in contact right up until the end.
  22. OL Jack Stewart 3-Star 6'4"/280lbs (New Canaan, CT) Grade: 77 - Stewart was playing tackle in high school but he projects to the interior at Michigan. He has all the size, strength, and just enough athleticism to become a contributor on the team. Was another one of Harbaugh's secret recruits that wasn't getting any national attention, but his appeal as a player is also starting to spread across the country. TCU, Texas A&M, and Auburn had all officially taken notice, and the offers kept coming in for him.
  23. ATH/WR George Johnson III 3-Star 5'11"/180lbs (Stuart, FL) Grade: 76 - Doesn't have a true position coming into college, as he mostly played QB in a spread option attack. Projects to wide receiver or the Viper linebacker position. He got experience everywhere in high school, but he should take a little time learning any position before he gets any meaningful game reps. Has enough ability to become a real threat and could see the field relatively early in his career despite his lack of positional experience.
  24. DE/TE Gabe Newburg 3-Star 6'4"/225lbs (Clayton, OH) Grade: 75 - Though he is not an "elite" prospect, Newburg possesses enough athleticism and versatility to become a game day contributor some day too. Rutgers, Michigan State, and Iowa were the other leaders on his offer list, and OSU has been in some contact too but there is not offer from them as of yet.
  25. S Joey Velazquez 3-Star 6'0"/200lbs (Columbus, OH) Grade: 74 - A two-sport athlete that excels in baseball, Velazquez has just started receiving attention as a gridiron star. He has not had an offer from OSU yet, but he was formerly committed to playing baseball for them so this is technically a "flip". I am sure an offer to play both sports there could change everything for him, but luckily for Michigan that does not appear to be on the horizon. For now, it looks like the Wolverines have a rising "Viper" prospect.
  26. WR Quintel Kent 3-Star 6'1"/170lbs (Lakewood, OH) Grade: 72 - Not a top prospect by any means. He possesses all the necessary tools to develop into a solid piece to the puzzle some day. Harbaugh is currently hitting pay dirt with other low-ranked receiving prospects from past classes, such as Zach Gentry and Ronnie Bell. Gentry was a quarterback in high school. Bell was a basketball prospect turned football player. Kent could be a diamond in the rough. Kent is one of the best players at one of the best high school programs in the state of Ohio. I for one am glad he is on the team.
