Basketball Update

My quick opinion on this Michigan Men's basketball team hasn't changed much. That loss at Northwestern is what it is: a talented home team with a fired up crowd going toe-to-toe with a hot but streaky Wolverine team in the middle of a tough stretch to wrap up the season. Good on the Wildcats for playing a tough game and making the play of the year at the end. Way to go! Now let's focus on Nebraska!

We will know more about this team in the coming weeks. The Big Ten tournament will be very interesting. If Michigan gets hot they could make a couple runs like they did last year. No doubt.

One player that I'd like to point out right away is freshman point guard Xavier Simpson. If he continues to rise the way that he has been over the last few weeks then this team could become a real threat to make a run for the Final Four. And yes, I do mean that. Why not? A team with great depth can stay more fresh during March Madness, and there are plenty of rising stars on this roster right now.

Hat's off to Derrick Walton Jr. as he has had the type of season that any out-going senior would be proud to have. Let's hope that he gets more rest than he did last year with the emergence of Simpson, so that he can stay fresh throughout games in the upcoming tournaments. The sky is the limit for this team, as it would be for any late-rising team with the caliber of young talent that is on this roster.

Projecting the New Look Defense

Base Defense:  +/- 40% of defensive plays will be run out of some sort of "50" or 3-4-type of formation with a few different subs in play at a couple positions, particularly along the front line. A lot of guys will get the chance to rotate in so I included all the guys that I think can contribute in some fashion this season. The positions where only one guy is listed means that they will rarely, if ever, leave the field. They should be team leaders who won't be really challenged for their jobs at the top and they look like future NFL draft picks. Edge: Aiden Hutchinson - A potential  First Team All-Big Ten player and a first round draft pick next spring. He should flourish in the new system. 2020 Recruiting Class Among the Top in the Nation (whether you believe it or not).

Jim Harbaugh and his Michigan coaching staff are wrapping things up for the 2020 recruiting class to mixed reviews. It's hard to argue against the talent they did acquire, but most detractors point to the lack of 5-Stars and the few big whiffs on top recruits to end the cycle. The simple fact of the matter is that it is another class by Harbaugh that ranks among the top 10% of college programs. In other words, with a 12th ranked rectuiting class, they were still better than 118 of the other 129 teams out there. Anyway I look at it, it still amazes me how people can be upset about it. Yes, it is true that they are not landing the big-time top-heavy classes that Ohio State, Alabama, and Clemson continue to land, but that is okay. It has to be okay because that's just not where the Wolverines are at right now. It is still a lot better than most though. And just ask Texas, UCLA, Tennessee, USC, and Nebraska fans how they would feel about the prospect of playing the Crimson Tide...
